When The Athenian School first opened in the fall of 1965 with 66 students, mattresses were delivered just in time, and when the rains came, it was a muddy trek from the dorms to the house classrooms. We were a brave and idealistic crew back then, and that intrepid spirit of adventure carried the day as we persevered and flourished through the rock n’ roll world of the 60s. There WAS more in us as we established the Athenian Wilderness Experience, faced our own economic challenges of the 90s, built new facilities, and improved our programs.
Over these 50 years, students have challenged themselves, developed self-awareness, learned that they can change the world, discovered their passions, and found joy in learning. We measure our success by graduating students who make a meaningful contribution in the world. They become thinkers and doers, artists and entrepreneurs, business leaders and activists who follow their hearts, and become engaged citizens.
We are proud of our past as we look to the future. What can we imagine today that will carry our students into the next 50 years? What will the world look like in 2065, and how will Athenian help shape that world? These are our opportunities as we take the next step in this great adventure.
I invite you to share your ideas about our future and join us in the many events we have planned for the year as we celebrate Athenian’s 50th Anniversary.
